In 2014, Creative Futures was approached by researchers at the UCL Ear Institute and Institute of Education (led by Dr Deborah Vickers and Professor Graham Welch) to collaborate on a study into the effects of singing on the pitch perception and speech ability of children with hearing impairment. We have been collaborating on this programme ever since, working with Year 1 and 2 pupils at Laycock School in Islington. From the summer of 2015 we will be collaborating on a new project with the same researchers in two specialist secondary deaf schools in London. We have been awarded 3-year funding by Youth Music to deliver this programme which will involve weekly vocal workshops, drumming, staff and music leader training, and instrumental courses during school holidays.
